It is no secret that I have been trying (and mostly succeeding) to lose weight over that last year. I've done it before, but always with crazy diets. Sure you can get results drinking a shake twice a day, but a) you miss chewing food like you wouldn't believe and b) that really doesn't set you up to keep the weight off. Eventually you have to start eating again!
This time around I am not on a diet. I am making small changes and choosing to do things a bit at time. It works for me. By doing it this way I am training myself gradually to adopt a new, healthier routine and I don't fall off a wagon because I feel so deprived. Last year I lost around 30 pounds and besides 5 that comes and goes, I have kept it off. I need to lose another 30 minimum to be at a comfortable weight.
The BodyMedia FIT is helping me by letting me know when I need to make physical changes to my routine to burn some additional calories. So now you are wondering what exactly a BodyMedia FIT is, right? Well it is a Body Monitoring Weight Management System that is deceptively simple to use and it has been clinically proven to improve weight loss up to 3x.
How does a simple armband work to help you lose weight?
You wear the armband for no more than 23 hours a day and it tracks every step you take, how many calories you are burning and how well you sleep. It has 4 sensors that are in contact with your skin continuously monitoring a wide range of your bodies actions and responses. Most body monitory systems track the number of steps you take (bodymedia included), while that is great it isn't really accurate as to your caloric burn. The BodyMedia system with its four sophisticated sensors pulls in over 5000 data points per minute. Meaning if you go for a 2 miles walk it records it, but if you go for a two mile walk up a steep hiking path it knows that you burnt a ton more calories .
- Galvanic Skin Response: When you sweat your skin becomes more electrically conductive. This measurement helps you see how active you are.
- Skin temperature measures the surface temperature of your body
- Heat Flux-- measures the rate at which heat dissipates from your body
- 3-Axis Accelerometer- measures the motion of your body and the number of steps taken
That is about as technical as I am going to get, you can read more on the website. Now I am going to tell you my thoughts. In all honesty I was very skeptical at first that this system to could really do everything it was touted too. I mean I've used pedometers that couldn't accurately count how many steps I took!
I received the BodyMedia *LINK Armband. (there is another smaller model but I chose this one because it is bluetooth capable) I took it out of the box and charged it up, while setting up my online account. Obviously, all that data is great but someone has to figure out what it all means and that certainly isn't going to be me. They have an online website that analyzes all the data and reports everything back to you in easy to understand visuals. After it was charged I put it on my arm, it fits snuggly to your skin and is mostly unnoticeable under your shirt sleeve. For the first day or two it was a bit annoying but now I don't notice it at all, as a matter of fact I feel weird when I take it off to shower or charge it.
After uploading the first days worth of data my skepticism went right out the window. I had worn it to bed and thought it would never catch my sleep patterns (or lack there of). I have a habit of frequently waking up and the bodymedia caught every time I got up to go the bathroom, get a drink, let a dog out or just stare at the clock with such accuracy that it was almost creepy.
I downloaded the free app to my iPhone and can check at anytime of the day, how much activity I have done, if I need to bump it up. It even tells how much of the activity is strenuous activity and for how long! This keeps me on my toes and from being a slouch. You can set goals for yourself, like the amount of steps to take in a day, minutes of physical activity, calories to burn and so on. I love when I beat my goals! The only negative thing I can say is that in logging your food, they system does not seem to have an extensive database. It does allow you to create your own dishes and save them though.

All in all I love my BodyMedia FIT and would recommend it to anyone that wants to make lifestyle changes. This system is really helping me to understand and be conscious of what I do. I can also tell you that customer service is amazing. I had a slight problem with my unit and they were so helpful and quick to resolve my problems. I wish every company I have had to deal with was like that!
