Over Fifties Fashion

It might seem as though the fashion world is obsessed with teenagers and twenty-somethings, but that certainly shouldn’t stop you from indulging your love of fashion when you hit your fifties. Of course, trawling the shops for hours on end can be quite a significant test of your patience, so it helps to have a strategy.

If you plan to shop in London, head to a specific destination and make a day of  it. London’s major department stores – mostly located around Oxford Street – are easy to navigate and often house their own cafes and restaurants, so you can take a break whenever the changing room queues start to exasperate. Oxford Street is home to a great range of department stores, so you’re sure to find something within your price range. Remember that sales assistants are there to help you, so don’t hesitate to ask for different sizes or styles when you’re trying things on.

If you fancy shopping somewhere a little different, try the Lakeside Centre in West Thurrock, Essex. The beauty of this shopping mall is that it houses over 300 stores under one roof, making it an ideal retail therapy destination, whatever the weather. Perhaps more importantly, it also offers a personal shopping service. A style consultation and shopping session lasting two hours is free; and if you want to spend an entire day in the hands of a capable fashion assistant, you can pay £190 and leave with a whole new wardrobe.

Alternatively, if the idea of having someone take over your shopping session doesn’t appeal; try somewhere fairly manageable in size, where you know that all the fashion will be good value. The designer outlet at Bicester Village is home to a range of shops, both high-end designer and premium high street, but as an outlet centre you can expect to see prices cut by up to 70%. The Village is beautifully designed, with topiary and little cafes lining the picturesque streets, as well as several restaurants where you can enjoy a really good meal.

If you’re planning on investing in a new wardrobe this season, make your money go further with a charge card from American Express. With no preset spending limit or interest charges, plus the opportunity to earn exclusive membership reward points on virtually every purchase, the American Express Platinum Card is the ideal shopping companion.
